Sentencing arguments set for mother who dumped newborns in garbage bin
Sentencing arguments have been set for Dec. 20 for Meredith Katharine Borowiec, convicted this week of dumping two newborn babies in the trash outside her northwest apartment building in 2008 and 2009.
Defence lawyers Andrea Serink and Jim Lutz advised Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Earl Wilson on Friday at criminal appearance court that the date had been pre booked with the court.
Borowiec, air max 1 originally charged with two counts of second degree murder, was found guilty of the lesser charges of infanticide on Tuesday by Justice Peter McIntyre, who presided over the trial that began last March.
McIntyre concluded that Borowiec, 32, was not yet over the effects of child birth when she wrapped the infants in blankets, placed them in garbage bags and took them down to the Dumpster air max 1 outside her home on 40th Ave.
Borowiec was interviewed by police after a passerby discovered a third baby, a boy, in a Dumpster outside the same building where she lived with her boyfriend in May 2010. Following interviews with friends and co workers, it was determined she had also been pregnant the previous two years, but no babies were ever seen.
The boy in the third case survived and was adopted but the bodies of the first two newborns were never found.
Serink and Lutz, as well as Crown prosecutors Jayme Williams and Daren Maloney, will make their sentencing submissions to McIntyre at the scheduled all day hearing next month.
Borowiec faces a maximum five year prison sentence for each count of infanticide. Had she been convicted of murder, she would have been subject to a life sentence with no chance of parole air max 1 for between 10 and 25 years.
