Sheriff’s team tackles crime waves

The 11 members of the special enforcement team that operates out of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley station have their hands in more than one pot.

The deputies investigate rashe cheap nike air max s of crimes: gang activity, stolen vehicles, burglaries, vandalism and drug sales. They follow leads, conduct surveillance and make arrests.

“The driving force, so to speak, is problem oriented policing,” said Lt. David Knudson, who leads the team. “We look to the community to see what is important to them, whether it is stolen vehicles, noise or vandalism. We try to respond to their concerns.”

The team chooses its focus based on crime statistics and, as has mostly been the case with the marijuana seizures, tip cheap nike air max s from residents, said Sgt. Andrew Elia. The officers meet every two weeks to pore over a database of information that shows the type, number and location of crimes. The discussions lead to creating a plan to attack the problem.

In the case of the grow houses, Elia said, once the Sheriff’s Department receives a tip, it can take a month to acquire enough evidence to ask a judge for a search warrant.

Each sheriff’s station in Riverside County has a special enforcement team. Their work rarely receives much attention. cheap nike air max But the Jurupa Valley team’s pot house busts have been discussed at City Council meetings and noted in the Eastvale Edition newsletter, prompting neighborhoods to be on the lookout for suspicious characters and deliveries.

“I really couldn’t ask for them to do more,” said Eastvale Mayor Ike Bootsma, whose city receives police services under a contract with the Sheriff’s Department. “I’m very proud of them.”

This month, after an increase in thefts from retail businesses in Jurupa Valley, uniformed and undercover members of the team fanned out to shopping centers on Limonite Avenue. Their arrests included a man under the influence of drugs who had stolen from a Rite Aid.

And the team continues to literally pull back the curtains on marijuana growing operations in Eastvale houses. So far in 2013, it has raided 19 homes, seizing 20,000 plants and 50 pounds of pot.

The latest, on Friday, June 21, in a rental home on Tiger Lilly Court, netted 333 marijuana plants, 31/2 pounds of processed marijuana and digital scales. They found entire rooms renovated with grow lights, electronics, commercial sized ventilation ducts and irrigation systems.

Knudson said deputies receive special training to recognize grow houses. The illicit farmers, who rarely sleep on the premises, try to m cheap nike air max ask the activity by covering windows and making the houses appear lived in by putting lights and televisions on timers.

“I think we’re making good headway,” Knudson said.

Tiger Lilly resident Luis Canargo lives only a few doors away and didn’t suspect anything amiss at the house. He was glad that the special enforcement team found out differently.

“I think it’s wonderful,” he said.

Elia, who has worked for the Sheriff’s Department for 12 years, previously was a member of the special enforcement team at the Moreno Valley station.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “There’s not a day when we’re not combating crime in Eastvale and Jurupa Valley. I think it’s very effective. We have a great group of guys. They’re very motivated and dedicated.”
